NATIONAL SEARCH FOR TWINKIES® RECIPES TO CELEBRATE ICONIC SNACK CAKE’S 75TH ANNIVERSARY

75 Taste-bud Tingling Recipes to be Featured in
Commemorative Twinkies Cookbook

As Twinkies prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, a national search is underway for the most taste bud-tingling Twinkies recipes. The 75 most creative submissions will be featured in a special commemorative 75th anniversary cookbook.

“From fried Twinkie crepes to Twinkie-misu to the Twinkie Toffee Treat, bakers, homemakers and kids of all ages have been creating delectable desserts for decades using America’s favorite snack cake,” said Mike Redd, vice president of cake marketing. “As Twinkies prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, we are searching for the most creative twists on America’s favorite tasty treat to be featured in a commemorative collection of scrumptious recipes.”

Recipes submissions should include a list of all ingredients and step-by-step instructions as well as the creator’s name, address and telephone number. The deadline for submission is March 31, 2005. Creators of recipes selected for the 75th anniversary collection will be notified soon afterwards. Recipe submissions will become the sole property of Interstate Bakeries Corporation.

Recipe submissions can be send to us here or via postal mail to:

Created by Jimmy Dewar in 1930, Twinkies has emerged from a Depression-era treat to a ubiquitous and enduring icon of Americana. Dewar, a Hostess® bakery manager in Chicago, sought to make use of shortcake pans that sat idle except for a six-week strawberry season and to create an inexpensive treat that could be sold year-round. He decided to inject the cakes with a smooth crème filling, originally banana and later vanilla-flavored following a banana shortage during World War II. A St. Louis billboard advertising “Twinkle Toe” shoes inspired the name for the new snack cake and the two-for-a-nickel Twinkies were born.

Interstate Bakeries Corporation, the maker of Twinkies, is the nation’s largest wholesale baker and distributor of fresh baked bread and sweet goods, under various brand names, including Wonder®, Hostess®, Dolly Madison®, Baker’s Inn®, Merita® and Drake’s®.
